Abstract

Traumatic brain injury is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Over the past several decades, numerous experimental animal models demonstrated that in addition to the primary physical impact of the injury, TBI leads to progressive pathophysiological changes, resulting in a reduction in brain–blood flow and a decrease in tissue oxygen levels leading to ischemia, subsequent secondary injury, blood–brain barrier breakdown and brain edema.
